ABOUT THE ARTIST
At the center of every human body is the trace of a life force – the powerful belly button. The idea that all growth and life stems from a central location is activated in my hard-edge abstract paintings. Visual motifs include the framing device, calligraphic curves, mirrored compositions, thick paint materiality, and textile logic, —all lend to an atmosphere of maximalist rapture, while the tension between organic and geometric forms creates a sometimes disrupted harmony. By using abstraction and compositional devices related to symmetry, doubling, inversion, and reflection—all revolving around the central spine of the painting—I am forming a connection between joy and devotion, real and imagined space, and most of all, the physical and the spiritual nature of painting. There is an overall sense of devotion in the work, leading to ideas of the wondrous and the ominous, the playful and the dangerous, in service of mystical abstraction
